Getting on the roof is one of the most critical parts of the home inspection, and you will see why in this video. The builder did not remove either one of the test caps from the roof plumbing vents. One of the caps snapped off and was lodged inside the pipe, permanently blocking air flow in or out of the vent. Test caps are temporarily installed on PVC vents to pressure test the drainage system for leaks before an owner takes occupancy. After the test is completed, the caps should be removed by the contractor. If the plumbing stack (vent pipe) is blocked by a test cap, air is not available to the drain system to prevent siphoning pressure on the water in the sink traps. If your vents are blocked, it can cause gurgling sounds in the drain pipes and siphon the water from the plumbing traps, allowing sewer gases to leak into the house. This is another reason why it is critical to get a home inspection before buying or selling a house.
